Are you listening on the same machine as you are broadcasting from? It could be the mic is picking up audio from the speakers or headphones.

You sure can. The type of topology makes no difference to the encoder so long as it supports the TCP/IP standards.

To listen to most streams comfortably you will need at least a 368kbps download connection. Most DSL or cable provider far surpass this bandwidth.

There are alot of devices that do this. Just about any media center device should support listening to audio.

This product can stream live as well as files.

As for linux there really isn't a good broadcasting solution yet that I have been able to build and test.

I would get a DJ automation system like SAM to do this. The software will allow you to script a scheduled live event.
