Renewal of listener count withouth blink

I read some time ago, I don't remember where, that someone managed to update his listener count in his site without the annoying blink that the meat tag "refresh" produces. Anyone knows how to do it?

the only ways I know of is to use
a small iframe (works in IE only)

use java
or
use flash
