streaming audio self-contained on a server

Post by Brad »

Hello All,
We would like to start an internet radio station that is completely self-contained on a server apart from adjusting playlists and other minor changes. We would like to set it up so that we don't need to broadcast from a home computer. Does anyone have any ideas about how to do this (what software etc)? We do want to start as cheaply as possible but will look at all possibilities. We can't afford a dedicated server.

All the best,
Brad

I know of no such capability among common servers. If you have shell access to the machine then you can upload the source tools to that server and run them strictly on that machine. But the server is not going to source itself.

Jay,
Am very new to this and have very little knowledge of servers. The source tools, would they be Winamp or something else? You also say that the server cannot source itself, can it source to another part of the server? If not, would it need to source another server to play the songs? Would you be able to recommend a good site that can explain the way a server works and how it is configured for something like Winamp - I would need very basic explanations.

Regards,
Brad.
