Steamcast is a stand alone server that combines the features of SHOUTcast and Icecast2 and more to make one mega awesome server.

A newbie question

Post by ravid »

Yet another newbie question, I have searched for this and could not find a hit. I have downloaded the Steamcast server for windows and trying to run it on windows 2003 standard server. The server runs fine by the looks of it. I also am able to use the winam dsp plugin and NSV GUI to connect to the server but when want to play back the file the server registers Invalid resource requests. The winamp comes up with ICY 404 not found error. Wondering where I am going wrong.

The following is the server log :

[03/29/2005@08:28:24] Configuration loaded from steamcast.conf

Source mount is configured to :

; SourceMount: This is the mount you would like to create, if you set
; this to /ghey.mp3 then you would be able to access this mount by
; going to http://localhost:8000/ghey.mp3 It is critical that you
; make sure to include the slash at the beginning.
SourceMount=/live.mp3

Source is the same where I am looking to playback from, can this be causing this problem? I have used shoutcast before and have a decent knowledge how this works but somehow I am unable to understand what to use to listen to. In this instance I tried listening using http://xxx.xx.xxx.xxx:8000/file.mp3 but in vain.

Thanks for the help in advance.

replace file.mp3 with the SourceMount

in this case

http://localhost:8000/live.mp3

Also be sure you set the mount name extension to the type you are sourcing, so if you are using NSV then change this to /live.nsv

Mp3 change to /live.mp3 so forth and so on for any other types you may wish to broadcast.

Thank you so much for answering this question. This forum is so much more easy to deal with compared to shoutcast one. I cannot beleive this is a free software :o with this kind of immediate response. This is close to unbelivable. I would love to make donations for this software for future developements, please let me know if I can do that using paypal.

I got it to work wonderfully well and I see no difference between shoutcast and steamcast. The admin panel via the web is simply awesome. Really some excellent work gone into this software. Also I like the feature where you can restrict a user to kick off only one audio stream from an IP. Lot of users simply use stream ripper or some kind of audio recording software which really use to irritate me. One thing I noticed though is the absense of restriction on the number of authorised users that can connect to the stream when you enable steamauth. It is a cool edition the steamauth but would be an excellent feature if the concurrent logins could be restricted. Lastly are there any any restrictions on using the username and password? Do the username and password have to be less than 8 characters in length or anything at all?

Just to top off is this software good enough for any number of connections? I know its dumb but just wondering if this server can take wmv and rm type of files as source?

Thanks again and look forward to being a part of this wonderful community.

Restricting authenticated users to a certain number of concurrent connections is already in the development version, so next beta release will have it. There are no restrictions to the length of a username or password other then that they have to be greater then 0 characters I believe (although not extensively tested). I have tested the server with 1000 concurrent connections on my local network and it seems to work fine. There is no real reason why it couldn't take those formats other then the fact that those formats are containers. As such those containers need to be handled by steamcast properly. Currently I have not gotten the code to handle windows media or real. Maybe one day I will finish this but it will take a lot more time, I have been extremely busy with finishing up school so development has halted for the moment. Bug fixing is the priority until I get out.

Appreciate your answers really, not many have time enough in this busy world to not just provide free software but to support it wonderfully well as you do. I have dealt with a lot of software sellers online and despite paying decent price the response times are really not so encouraging. Eagerly look forward to your forthcoming release and would be keen to contribute towards this project in kind if you can let me know how.

Thanks so much for your time.
